In other words, Honneth’s broad interest is in developing a theory of social justice in which it is acknowledged that individuals can be whole only within the context of a larger community. According to Honneth, Hegel’s line of argument is similar to Rousseau and Kant in that he is aiming to explain the principle of state order.8 But, he differs from them in that he sees law as doing more than protecting individual freedom. Honneth points out that instead, Hegel’s supposition is that “The system of law must instead create a ‘realm’ in which each individual’s freedom can be actualized.”9 In other words, community is just as important, if not more, than the autonomy of the individual. This means that:

[I]n order to enjoy such rights, the subject must be willing to concede other subjects the same claim to the unhindered actualization of their personal freedom. For Hegel, therefore, the basis of abstract rights is an intersubjective form of recognition, which consists in mutual adherence to the demand that they each “be a person and respect others as persons.”10
